Applied Research Student Project Showcase at Algonquin College
Applied Research at Algonquin College invites all industry partners in the region to attend the upcoming Applied Research Student Project Showcase on December 3, 2024, host at Algonquin College. At this event, learners and faculty reveal the results of months of dedicated work on cutting-edge projects in collaboration with industry, community, and government partners.
The showcase features more than 50 innovative applied research projects in a wide range of fields, including computer programming, interactive media design, and much more. This term, learners from our nursing programs will present their capstone projects, addressing various health-related challenges with unique solutions.
We are excited to welcome Julia Slanina as our guest speaker for this term’s showcase. Julia is an entrepreneur, community builder, and digital health innovator. She is the founder and CEO of Treehouse, a company dedicated to improving community healthcare for families across Canada.
A former medical student turned tech entrepreneur; Julia is passionate about digital health innovation. She is also a Coralus Activator and serves on various boards and advisory councils, including Femtech Canada and KidsUpFront. Her work has been featured in Forbes and The Logic.

Project Highlights
Here’s a preview of some of the innovative projects featured in our upcoming showcase:
• Éco-Déchets (Computer Programming Program): This application measures landfill waste, recyclables, and organic residues produced by Canadian households; and displays the results in interactive and user-friendly graphs. This initiative is crucial for addressing critical issues of greenhouse gas emissions from residential waste.
• Shopful (Computer Programming Program): A user-friendly platform designed to help customers conveniently search for items and locate stores that carry their desired products based on their location.
• IMD Showcase (Interactive Media Design): This is a dedicated space where prospective students, employers, alumni, and professors can view the exceptional talent of Algonquin College graduates. The showcase will feature numerous portfolios from our talented learners.
• Nursing Projects: These capstone projects tackle various challenges and propose innovative solutions, including sexual health promotion for immigrant women, stigma reduction in mental health, and opportunities to enhance community understanding of disability.
