About this Event
Digital Literacy – Knowing, Understanding, and Using digital – is critical to growth, governance, and relevance in today’s age of exponential technological advancements. And, the Internet of Things (IoT) presents one of the largest and fundamental digital literacy challenges.
Workshop Description:
The Internet of Things (IoT) is here. It digitally interconnects physical things, humans and applications, and generates unprecedented lakes of data about us and the world we live in. Whether applied to wearables, connected transportation, industrial automation, drones, smart cities, precision agriculture, or other areas, IoT delivers great benefits along with new challenges. The many benefits, which include improved revenue and costs, increased efficiencies, better standard of living, and convenience, are confounded by challenges such as privacy, security, and social disruption. Knowing IoT and these paradoxical effects is a critical part of digital literacy.
Knowing IoT and its effects, however, is not enough. Design Thinking is the critical partner that adds the Understanding and the Using (application) parts to the literacy whole. To fully deliver on IoT benefits, tackle the challenges, and resolve the contention between them, organizations must first understand their end-users’ and stakeholders’ or citizens’ perspectives and needs – which is an important aspect of Design Thinking.
Design Thinking also tackles solution generation with ideation and prototyping through co-creation with end-users. Working IoT verticals and policy use cases through the Design Thinking lens delivers on the Understanding and Using aspects of digital literacy.
This powerful combination of understanding the IoT space and its technologies and how users will use them to solve challenges through design thinking is vital for attaining Digital Literacy. It’s the critical piece needed for developing better products, services, and policies with IoT.
