How Green is Your Green? Using Design for the Environment to Reduce Your Green Product/Service’s Environmental Impact

With today’s environmental problems growing ever bigger, it is encouraging to see a range of new green products and services enter the market. Easily taken in by marketing, we tend however to overlook aspects of a product or service that, behind their cool design features, point to an environmental footprint that may be no better or sometimes even worse than a ‘non-green’ alternative.

Design for the Environment – DFE – (aka green or eco design) is a method to minimize or eliminate the environmental impacts of a product or service over its entire lifecycle. We will look briefly at this approach, its central idea (life cycle thinking = environmental impact from material sourcing to energy use to disposal), and a few examples of products and services and how they stack up against each other in terms of green design.

About Barbara Odenwald: As owner of Innovamundi Consulting and with over 22 years in consulting, coaching and training, Barbara helps leaders gain clarity, set and meet goals in their organization, and overcome challenges to become leaders in their industry. She works collaboratively to transform organizations through innovative leadership- and team-capacity building, using proven analytical tools in behaviour, leadership skills, creative problem-solving, design-thinking and business effectiveness.
