This session will focus on two major challenges that a business will face: intellectual property and data privacy. First, the speakers will address basic intellectual property concerns by giving a brief overview of copyrights, trademarks and patents, including the laws that you need to be aware of. Second, the speakers will address basic legal issues associated with the use of personal information, including compliance with applicable privacy laws in Canada.

There will be a question and answer portion of the session as well.

Biographies: Mariève Boivin:

Mariève Boivin anticipates receiving her J.D. from the University of Ottawa in June 2017. Before attending law school, she received a B.A. from the University of Ottawa, where she graduated with honours. During law school, Mariève worked as a Summer Law Student with the Department of Justice. In her third year of law school, Mariève assumed the position of Executive Editor with the Ottawa Law Review. In her spare time, Mariève enjoys team sports including hockey, soccer and beach volleyball, as well as weightlifting and cardio enduring training. Mariève is fluent in French.

Maleeha Akhtar:

Maleeha Akhtar is anticipated to receive her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Ottawa in June 2017. Previously, she received a B.Comm (Honours) from the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa, and a B.A in History from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador. She has a particular interest in technology law. In that vein, she was awarded and completed a Directed Research Fellowship at the Canadian Internet and Public Policy Clinic (CIPPIC). In her final year of law school, she continues to work both at the Business Law Clinic and CIPPIC.
As a ardent traveller, Maleeha has lived in over 6 countries and travels as often as she can. She is fluent in five languages including Urdu and Hindi.
