True North Strong: Anansi Storytelling Canada Day Experience

2019 marks 400 years since the start of the Transatlantic slavery, and in 2018 Canada officially recognized the UN International Decade For People of African Descent. One year later we are celebrating the contributions of Canada’s multi-cultural youth and the innovative way they share stories in a digital age. In partnership with Tribe1 and the Young Leaders Advisory Council, Canada Day 2019 will present the first ever True North Strong: Anansi Storytelling Canada Day Experience featuring a series of interactive storytelling workshops, VR Exhibits, and Afrocentric community performances. #WeAreTrueNorthStrong #UNDPAD.

Join thousands of young people from across Canada spanning from Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Winnipeg and beyond as Canada’s youth activate Major Hill Park in Ottawa, Ontario on June 30 – July 1, 2019. Come see for yourself what it means to be TRUE. NORTH. STRONG. AND FREE during a vibrant Canada Day celebration led by Canada’s youth. Visitors will experience the National Capital Region through the lens of a new era of urban creatives. The event at Major Hill will feature five discovery activation experiences:

  • YLAC’s signature Sankofa Drumming Circle For All Seven Generations,
  • interactive Canada Day Slam Poetry workshop,
  • am Elephant Stories Garden featuring Karlyn Percil-Mercieca and her Sister Talk Team,
  • Canadian Barber Throwdown, and:
  • Various cultural exchanges with urban storytellers through the Connecting The Dots “Take A Story, Leave A Story” Virtual Reality activation zone!
