Defining the Boundaries of AgeTech: Can Code Care?

AI is rapidly reshaping AgeTech: from “empathetic” companions and memory tools to fall detection, risk scoring, and care marketplaces. The more imminent question is: what should it not do.

This is not a rejection of innovation. More like a pathway toward better, more ethical, and more effective design. The conversation challenges commonly accepted assumptions and surfaces the trade-offs embedded in today’s AI-driven agetech.

As agetech becomes a participatory actor in care, it is critical that it is based in real human values. Using vignettes, we will unpack fundamentals of good agetech design:

  1. Human experience and care: How can technology strengthen care, connection, and autonomy?
  2. Outcomes and trade-offs: What should AgeTech optimize for, and how do we weigh competing goals?
  3. Trust and accountability: What builds trust in AI-enabled AgeTech?
  4. Real-world adoption and impact: What does it take for AgeTech to work in everyday rhythm of homes, communities, care work, and policy?

Whether you build, buy, fund, deploy, or regulate AgeTech, this session will give you a clear set of lenses for deciding what “good” agetech looks like beyond demos and dashboards. Expect concrete examples, thoughtful debate, and take-home principles.
