Telesat: Powering Global Connectivity from Ottawa with Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites
Ottawa continues to lead on the global stage as a powerhouse for aerospace, satellite, and telecommunications innovation.
One of the most recent contributions to the city’s sterling tech reputation is Telesat (Nasdaq and TSX: TSAT), a Canadian pioneer in satellite communications with headquarters in Ottawa, connecting communities, businesses, and governments around the world for over five decades.
Telesat’s latest milestone is a multi-year agreement with Viasat, a major global communications provider.
The contract was announced on April 4, 2025, marking a substantial commitment to the Telesat Lightspeed Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, which will provide high-capacity, low-latency broadband connectivity.
In a major new partnership, Telesat is teaming up with global communications company Viasat to bring faster, more reliable Wi-Fi to airplanes using the Telesat Lightspeed satellite network.
Viasat provides Wi-Fi to thousands of airplanes, and planes that are already equipped with Viasat GM-40 antenna will soon connect to the Telesat Lightspeed network and enjoy fast, low-latency internet.
Additional in-flight connectivity antennas will also be able to access the Telesat Lightspeed network.
As Telesat continues to push forward with the Telesat Lightspeed deployment, it strengthens both its global position and Ottawa’s role as a world-class hub for satellite communications technology.

Hyperlume Secures $17.8M to Revolutionize AI Data Centre Efficiency
Ottawa’s tech scene continues to make headlines, and Hyperlume is the latest local company to shine on the global stage.
A client within Invest Ottawa’s IO Flex program, Hyperlume recently announced the close of an impressive $17.8 million seed round, fueling its mission to dramatically reduce the carbon footprint and energy consumption of AI data centers worldwide.
Co-founded in 2022 by CEO Mohsen Asad Fariborzi (pictured pitching at the 2024 Startup World Cup Regional Ottawa pitch competition as part of AccelerateOTT) and President and CTO Hossein Fariborzi, Hyperlume has developed a cutting-edge software platform that optimizes the way data centers manage and deliver large-scale AI workloads.
With cloud and AI adoption soaring, power-hungry data centers have become a growing concern for sustainability. Hyperlume tackles this challenge head-on by enabling organizations to train and deploy AI models with up to 40% less energy use, according to the company’s internal testing.
The recent seed funding round was co-led by BDC’s Deep Tech Venture Fund and ArcTern Ventures, with participation from MUUS Climate Partners, SOSV, and Intel Capital, the investment arm of American semiconductor giant Intel, with a strategic investment from LG Technology Ventures.
This strong backing speaks to the increasing global demand for green infrastructure in the tech ecosystem—and the trust placed in Hyperlume’s talented team to deliver it.
Hyperlume is more than a clean-tech innovator; it’s a scaling Ottawa success story. Since joining the Flex program, the company has benefited from Invest Ottawa’s curated advisory support, market insights, and community connections, helping it accelerate its commercial roadmap and secure early traction.
With its headquarters in Ottawa and a growing team of engineers and researchers, Hyperlume is poised to scale rapidly in 2025. The company’s next step? Moving from pilot deployments to full-scale implementation with major cloud service providers and enterprise partners.
As demand for AI infrastructure continues to explode, Hyperlume’s energy-efficient solution is a timely and vital contribution to the industry—and the planet.
At Invest Ottawa, we’re proud to support mission-driven companies like Hyperlume that combine innovation with impact. Stay tuned as they scale new heights, redefine green computing, and put Ottawa at the forefront of sustainable AI.

Delights by Mama Brings Latin American Flavour to the Capital
What started as a dream shared between two sisters-in-law on maternity leave has grown into a thriving food venture in Ottawa. Meet Jessica and Ivana, the dynamic sister-in-law duo behind Delights by Mama, a proudly immigrant- and mom-owned business sharing the bold, comforting flavours of Argentina and Colombia — one empanada at a time.
“Our business started at home, inspired by family recipes passed down through generations,” they said. “We wanted to offer something truly handmade, heartfelt, and different, especially when people were craving connection and comfort through food.”
As their venture has grown, so too has the recognition and opportunities coming their way.
One of their biggest recent wins after being invited by Aramark Sports and Entertainment to be a pop-up food option during the Ottawa Senators games through March and April, as part of its Ottawa Street Eats initiative, highlighting diverse food vendors.
“It’s been an incredible experience not only for exposure but also for growth,” they shared. “Being able to share our empanadas with thousands of fans has opened new doors for us.”
They’ve also gained community recognition — including a 2025 Faces Magazine Award nomination for Best Gluten-Free Menu and a Platinum Award from Ottawa Community Votes for Best Latin American Restaurant.
“Every milestone feels personal,” they said. “It’s a reflection of the heart, hard work, and passion we pour into every empanada.”
Growing with Invest Ottawa
Jessica and Ivana also participated in the recent CPG Edition of the Ontario government’s Starter Company Plus program, delivered by Invest Ottawa, which they say helped them gain the tools and clarity they needed to move forward.
“The program was a game changer for us,” they said. “It helped us really understand who we’re serving, how we’re helping them, and why our business matters. It also gave us the tools to pitch our business confidently.”
According to the duo, the benefits of participating continued well beyond the program.
“Invest Ottawa has been an incredible support system, from hosting our lunch pop-ups to providing mentorship and opening doors to new opportunities,” they said. “The network we’ve built has been essential for our growth.”
What’s Next
This summer, the Delights by Mama team will open their first combined production kitchen and storefront on Stittsville Main Street. Jessica and Ivana are planning a grand opening event celebrating their new space and the community.
“This new space will let us expand our wholesale operations, serve fresh empanadas daily and create a community hub where all people can experience Latin American flavours in a fresh, authentic way.”
Along with the new space, they plan to boost their presence at farmers markets, festivals, and venues across Ottawa, all while continuing to offer gluten-free, halal, vegan, and vegetarian options.
“We’re passionate about making our food accessible to everyone,” they said. “With the kitchen running, the ideas and possibilities are limitless!”
