Understanding Spatial Media – Author Meets Readers

Author Meets Readers invites Carleton students and the community to join an informal discussion on new books published by members of the Carleton University Faculty of Public Affairs.

About the Book “Understanding Spatial Media”: Over the past decade, a new set of interactive, open, participatory and networked spatial media have become widespread. These include mapping platforms, virtual globes, user-generated spatial databases, geodesign and more. Understanding Spatial Media brings together leading scholars from around the globe to examine these new spatial media, their attendant technologies, spatial data, and their social, economic and political effects.

About the Editors: Tracey P. Lauriault is Assistant Professor of Critical Media Studies and Big Data in the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University; Matthew W. Wilson is Associate professor, Geography, University of Kentucky and the lead editor is Geography Professor Rob Kitchin, National University of Ireland Maynooth. The book is an output from the European Research Council funded Programmable City project based in Ireland.

The panel will feature:

  • Professor Teresa Scassa, Canada Research Chair in Information Law at the University of Ottawa (Contributing Author to Understanding Spatial Media)
  • Peter Puslifer, Research Scientists at the National Snow Ice and Data Centre (NSIDC) and co-director of the Geomatics and Cartographic Research Centre (GCRC) at Carleton University. (Contributing Author to Understanding Spatial Media)
  • Cameron Wilson, founder of Geogratis (the first open data portal in Canada) and is Manager of Data Management for Geomatics and Geoscience at Natural Resources Canada.

This event is part of the Ottawa International Writer’s Festival.
