Invest Ottawa proudly celebrates the 15th anniversary of Ottawa-based Giatec Scientific Inc. – a company that has grown from a single cubicle into a global leader in smart concrete testing technologies. 

Marking this milestone with employees, partners, and clients on September 9th, Giatec’s anniversary celebration on September 9th, 2025, was filled with reflection, gratitude, and pride.

From its founding in 2010 by civil engineering PhDs Pouria Ghods and Aali R. Alizadeh, Giatec has transformed how the world builds with concrete, making it smarter, greener, stronger, and more efficient.  

“On behalf of all of us at Invest Ottawa, thank you — founders, team members, board, customers, and partners — for everything you have built here in Ottawa, and everything you continue to contribute to our city, our economy, and our world,” said Sonya Shorey, President and CEO, Invest Ottawa, during her opening remarks at the anniversary celebration. 

15 Years of Purpose-Driven Innovation 

Founded in 2010, Giatec set out to close the gap between research advances in concrete and the urgent, real-world challenges of aging infrastructure. What began as an idea in Ottawa has grown into a global mission: to make concrete smarter, greener, stronger, and more efficient. 

Over Giatec’s 15 years, the company has delivered breakthrough technologies including SmartRock®, SmartMix™, Giatec 360™, Roxi™, and SmartHub™, harnessing IoT, AI, and real-time data to eliminate inefficiencies, reduce cement use, shrink carbon emissions, and dramatically improve safety and performance on construction sites everywhere. 

“Giatec’s products are now trusted in more than 20,000 projects around the world, from skyscrapers in San Francisco to highways here in Ontario,” Shorey added. “They are shaping the future of global construction, and you are doing it from right here in Ottawa.”

Since joining Invest Ottawa’s ScaleUp Program in 2019, Giatec has engaged in more than 2,000 hours of advisory support, peer groups, market insights, and capital connections. Its leaders have also given back generously to the ecosystem, embodying Ottawa’s founders helping founders ethos.
