As the world races toward clean energy solutions, fusion power generation is emerging as one of the most promising and complex frontiers.

Turning fusion from research into reality requires more than scientific breakthroughs. One of the critical challenges is the fuel cycle, which demands advanced engineering, integrated systems, and global collaboration to be safely and efficiently managed at scale.

Fusion Fuel Cycles (FFC) is making that future possible from Ottawa.

Advancing Fusion Through Fuel Cycle Technologies

Fusion Fuel Cycles is a joint venture between Kyoto Fusioneering (KF) and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), bringing together the depth of a national laboratory with the agility of a leading fusion startup.

The company provides world-class engineering services, backed by a global supply chain and advanced facilities, to support fusion fuel cycle development in a safe and efficient manner.

At the centre of its work is UNITY-2, the first-ever fully integrated fusion fuel system. Designed as a platform for advancing commercial fusion, UNITY-2 represents a critical step toward making fusion energy viable at scale.

By combining technical expertise with a customer-focused approach, FFC is positioning itself as a key enabler in the global fusion ecosystem.

Building at a Pivotal Moment

The global push for decarbonization is accelerating investment in next-generation energy technologies. Fusion, long considered a future solution, is moving closer to commercialization, creating demand for the infrastructure and systems that will support it.

FFC’s work addresses one of the most complex components of that challenge: the fuel cycle.

Through its UNITY-2 demonstration fuel cycle, FFC is proving out an integrated system that enables continuous operation and, ultimately, power generation demonstrations. This includes demonstrating fuel exhaust and pumping, direct internal recycling, fuel clean-up and isotope separation, tritium management and storage, extraction and detritiation, and fusion core refuelling. As governments, researchers, and private-sector leaders advance fusion programs, the need for integrated, scalable solutions is growing rapidly. FFC’s engineering capabilities and platform development place it at the forefront of this emerging market.

Why Ottawa

As a Canadian company with international reach, FFC selected Ottawa as the location for its corporate headquarters, establishing operations at Bayview Yards, operated by Invest Ottawa.

Bayview Yards offers proximity to Ottawa’s downtown core, access to global transportation through the Ottawa International Airport, and critically close connectivity to Chalk River, where UNITY-2 is being developed.

“Opening our Ottawa office allows us to work more closely with government, industry, and research partners to bring UNITY-2 to life,” said Dr. Ian Castillo and Yuhei Nozoe, Co-Chief Executive Officers of FFC.

“This expansion strengthens our corporate, engineering, and project delivery work, and connects us with the communities that make Ottawa a hub for clean-energy leadership. We’re excited to celebrate this milestone with our partners and to continue building Canada’s role in the global fusion ecosystem.”

The city’s role as a centre for policy, research, and international collaboration provides a strong foundation for companies operating at the intersection of advanced technology and global energy priorities.

Strengthening Growth Through Ecosystem Integration

Since establishing its presence at Bayview Yards, FFC has integrated into Ottawa’s innovation ecosystem, benefiting from both infrastructure and community.

“We have had a very positive experience at Bayview Yards,” the team noted. “The office and event team is fantastic, striving to achieve high standards in its service and support.”

As Ottawa’s one-stop business acceleration hub, Bayview Yards provides more than workspace. It offers access to a network of entrepreneurs, researchers, partners, and stakeholders supporting collaboration and growth for companies operating in complex, high-impact sectors.

For FFC, this environment supports both operational efficiency and long-term strategic development.

With UNITY-2 under development and global interest in fusion accelerating, Fusion Fuel Cycles is entering a critical phase of growth.

The company continues to expand its engineering capabilities, strengthen partnerships, and engage with organizations and researchers interested in advancing fusion fuel cycle solutions.

As fusion moves closer to commercialization, platforms like UNITY-2 will play a central role in enabling the transition from concept to reality.

From its headquarters in Ottawa, FFC is contributing to that global effort, helping shape the future of clean energy.
