Three reasons tech talent will want to join the Auxon team

Jan 25, 2023

In our monthly Trending in Tech blog series, we offer up an inside look at tech companies that are growing and creating new opportunities for Ottawa’s tech talent.

Founded in 2018 on a belief that automation could lead to a better future, Auxon works to provide governments and companies around the world with world-class solutions for engineers and innovators.

Looking to learn what Auxon has planned, and how you can join the team? Read on to learn more about Auxon from the company itself, and the tech skills it is looking for in potential team members.

What does Auxon do?

At Auxon, our mission is to enable a world of automation that we can all depend on. Whether it’s warehouse robots, self-driving trucks, autonomous farm tractors or robotic surgeons, Auxon’s software automates the laborious and often unreliable testing of complex systems, helping free teams to focus on delivering safer systems faster.

Can you share a little about Auxon’s growth as a company?

We founded Auxon in 2018 because we believed that automation could lead to a better future for everyone. And we wanted to help make that happen.

Early on we identified a critical challenge that would end up defining our company’s mission: automating complex tasks requires incredible system complexity. Millions of lines of code must work together flawlessly, every time, in every situation.

Today, things go wrong in these cyber-physical systems all the time, often at the worst possible moments. These failures can be dangerous, and they impact our trust in automation.

To address this challenge, our team set out to build world-class solutions that software engineers and innovators would need to navigate, understand, and address the risks in these complex systems.

Today, Auxon sells its software and provides services to organizations worldwide, from sea-based renewable energy systems to autonomous mini-rovers destined for the moon. Our portfolio of customers is growing, and we’re excited to be working with
companies and governments that are on the cutting edge of innovation and criticality.

For a bit of deep dive, here’s a short video about how our software suite works: https://auxon.io/modality-walkthrough (We’ve since changed the names of our software products, but this should give you a decent technical primer.)

Are there particular tech skills that are in demand for your company?

Having an end-user focus and strong opinions about what makes for an excellent testing & debugging experience (e.g. data visualization, CLIs, and TUIs).

Our stack is primarily Rust (both `std` and `no_std`). Professional Rust experience isn’t a prerequisite, but we’ve found that being into something a little weird is helpful (e.g. your teammates draw from backgrounds in embedded C, Erlang, and Clojure).

Can you highlight a few open positions you’re currently hiring for?

We’re looking for an exceptional Software Engineer with an end-user focus and strong opinions about what makes for an excellent testing & debugging experience (e.g. data visualization, CLIs, and TUIs). Ideal candidates love the idea of joining a small, dedicated senior dev team where correctness and quality matter.

We are looking for an experienced Product Marketing Manager who can help Auxon craft, target, and execute a compelling product marketing strategy. The ideal candidate loves tech and can translate complex concepts into everyday language that a wide variety of stakeholders can understand. This is an exciting time for Auxon, and you can expect to work directly with our leadership and the engineering team to develop go-to-market strategies and direct launches for our products.

What do you look for in a candidate looking to join the team?

Auxon is a growing and fast-moving environment. We’re looking for candidates who can manage highly interdependent, complex projects without losing sight of the user. We also believe that diverse teams are better. We fall short of that goal today, but as we move forward the team at Auxon is committed to developing a remote team that includes a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives.

We believe that diverse teams aren’t just a modern moral imperative; they challenge stale ways of thinking, and cast old problems in a new light, making us all better at our jobs.

3 reasons tech talent will want to join the team at Auxon

1. We’re an empathetic, detail-oriented, technically capable bunch.

2. Auxon tackles hard problems at a global scale, and we have found that curiosity, along with a willingness to create new frameworks of thinking and understanding, is the best route to creative, durable solutions. No rock is left unturned. No idea is too sacred. We test the resilience of each other’s ideas with respect and work hard to keep conversations productive.

3. We believe that maintaining a healthy balance between work life and personal life is vital to our success. We don’t limit vacation time, and we make sure that employees and their families receive excellent healthcare benefits.
